Eye | Occupy Movement Music | Plastic Blight | Tetsuo Kondo's 'A Path in the Forest'

Forest Perspective

Now this is a walk in the woods! The incredibly beautiful “A Path in the Forest” by architect Tetsuo Kondo was a temporary installation in the Kadriorg Park near Tallinn, Estonia. This experience of communing with trees from an entirely different perspective was part of Tallinn’s 2011 European Capital of Culture series, one of 11 urban installations. via TCH

Plastic Blight

The Guardian writes that despite measures to promote recycling, discarded plastic continues to blight our planet.  And the problem isn’t only plastic.

Earlier this year, Austria-based environmental consultancy Denkstatt imagined such a world, where farmers, retailers and consumers use wood, tins, glass bottles and jars, and cardboard to cover their goods. It sounds like a better values-driven strategy, right? Unfortunately this packaging vision increased volume by 3.6 times, taking more than double the energy to make and generating almost 3 times the greenhouse gases.

Lincoln Park SoundScape Naturally Kisses Gehry's New World Symphony Hall

DesignTracker| Miami Beach SoundScape/Lincoln Park is a meandering expanse of plants, pergolas, and palms designed around Frank Gehry’s New World Symphony classical music hub. Soundscape opens tonight with the concert hall.

“The park was designed to be a very flexible space,” West 8 principal Jamie Maslyn Larson tells us. “It needed to be both a great day-to-day-use park and one that could support multifaceted events, including video displays and an audio system that’s world-class.”

The park uses the Gehry building’s 7.500-square-foot blank wall as a giant projection screen for concerts and video art.

In every aspect strives to establish a new precedent for parks in the City of Miami Beach.

Slow Living Values at New York's High Line Urban Park

Last evening I posted a long and important New York Magazine article about Freshkills Park, an exciting plan to reclaim the garbage heap called Fresh Kills, on New York’s Staten Island. It’s a stunning reclamation project for New York, a city now able to rebirth this parkland, because we’re shipping our garbage out of state. (To every action, there is a reaction.)

Besides Fresh Kills, landscape architect James Corner is the head of another fantastic Manhattan reclamation project called High Line.

Cultural Creatives lead the way on Environmental Concerns. I discovered this excellent Charlie Rose, Edward Norton clip, in which Edward Norton sums up beautifully the mindset of approach of Cultural Creatives on environmental and civic issues.

The video footage of Manhattan’s High Line reclamation project is superb. I lived years ago in Chelsea, very near the High Line and never wondered what was “up there”. To be honest, I assumed that it was some kind of elevated, old road, not a set of train tracks.
