Eye | Bill Clinton @ National Retail Federation | Top Nutrient Dense Foods

Bill Clinton and Macy’s Inc. chairman and chief executive officer Terry J. LundgrenAmerica’s 42nd president and founder of the William J Clinton Foundation was cautiously hopeful, speaking before a crowd of 5,000 at the National Retail Federation’s annual convention Monday in New York.  Citing a 5 percent growth rate in retail last year, Clinton said retail ourperformed the total economy at 2 percent. WWD reports:

However, the 42nd president of the U.S. and founder of the William J. Clinton Foundation, cited the deep financial and psychological impact of the current economic crisis including how people feel about themselves and their prospects which are changing, noting that many men are taking retail jobs that traditionally went to women. “All during my childhood and young adulthood, I never doubted not for one minute I could make a living.” But the recent economic crisis has “shattered” that line of thought for people. “This is more than just an economic crisis. It’s gone to the core of people’s sense of who they are and what they are worth.”

Clinton’s speech was themed ‘Embracing Our Common Humanity’ and it covered the world’s unsustainable way of life; his humanitarian efforts in Haiti; and fighting childhood obesity in the US. Speaking of childhood obesity, Clinton said it could “bankrupt the health care system if we don’t do something about it.”

On the subject of solutions, Clinton cited the development of high-end manufacturing jobs and patronizing the small independent shopkeeper. High-end manufacturing jobs support American research labs, and America must not lose those, said Clinton.

Citing Corning Glass, based in upstate New York, Clinton said:

“Corning manufactures all over the world but they also manufacture here because their labs are here,” Clinton said. “They want manufacturing and research together so they can check [new products] right away.…The manufacturing structure ought to give people incentives to do this.”

Top Nutrient Dense Foods

Organic Authority details The 8 Most Nutrient Dense Foods on Earth. Voilà chocolate is on the list, but only in the right form. The 8 foods included are spirulina, kale, hemp seeds, chocolate, brocolli, spinach, chia and berries. Talking chocolate, we read:

Cacao beans are so nutrient-dense that scientists haven’t even begun to identify all the benefits in the little bean yet. Don’t grab a Snickers though—the good stuff is found only in raw cacao beans or nibs (or really, really dark chocolate). Minerals, vitamins and tons of antioxidants are great for your heart, skin, and release chemicals in the brain that make you feel like you’re in love.

Only 28% of American Biology Teachers Teach Darwin's Theory of Evolution

Glenn Beck doing his best howling monkey routine at CPAC conference. Magana/APA new study of America’s high school biology teachers confirms that despite 40 years of court cases ruling that teaching creationism or intelligent design violates the Constitution, most teachers don’t embrace the scientific facts of evolutionary biology.

A new study by Penn State’s Michael Berkman and Eric Plutzer says that only 28 percent of America’s biology teachers consistently teach the scientific evidence that evolution has occurred, while 13% only teach creationism. Sixty percent don’t teach much at all, omitting the subject because they don’t want controversy. via Science Daily

This evidence comes at a time when the Vatican embraces evolutionary theory for decades. Islam embraces evolutionary biology. The vast number of other religious denominations in America embrace evolutionary biology.

Intelligent design doesn’t deny evolution but insists that God started the big bang, which is the Vatican’s position and that of many US Christians.

“Endless Forms: Charles Darwin, Natural Science and the Visual Arts” exhibitAs America’s students fall further behind the rest of the world in science, new research about the nation’s biology teachers dovetails with research about Americans in general. Gallup polled Americans on the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birthday and found that 39% of Americans believe in evolution; 25% reject it; and 36% have no opinion.

In the Gallup poll, 57% of America’s high school or less responders had no idea who Darwin even is.

Pope Asserts God Was Absolutely Behind Big Bang in Universe

RedTracker| The Vatican had a busy day, with the Pope moving from news of his new Discovery Channel series on exorcisms from the Vatican files to denouncing the big bang theory of life in our universe as a result of chance.

The Pope rarely talks about science and creation, but today was unyielding in his assertion that “The universe is not the result of chance, as some would want to make us believe.”

Restoring the Reputation of The Female Preying Mantis

We so love sex in nature stories at AOC. They’re far more exciting than any trouble Carrie ever got into on ‘Sex and the City’. It seems that the reputation of the female praying mantis is besmirched by incompetent science. Jezebel is hot on the trail of the story, via I Blame the Patriarchy.

New research tells a different story about Ms. Praying Mantis, who is only a predator 5-31% of the time, based on new observations. The original research conclusions were drawn on preying mantises that were most likely hungry.

The mantis has an enormous appetite, eating up to sixteen crickets a day, but is not limited to just insects. They are carnivorous and cannibalistic, and only eat live prey in both nymph and adult stages. Caged in a jar, rather than in open-air living, the mantis will bite.

“Placing them in the same jar, the male, in alarm, endeavoured to escape. In a few minutes the female succeeded in grasping him. She first bit off his front tarsus, and consumed the tibia and femur. Next she gnawed out his left eye…it seems to be only by accident that a male ever escapes alive from the embraces of his partner” Leland Ossian Howard, Science, 1886.

When observed ‘au naturel’, cannibalism occurs much less often. Besides, asks writer Michele Doughty, why is it a catastrophe that the male mantis dies, passing on his genes and vitamins to his offspring, so that they can continue the chain of evolution.

We had a very smart-ass hypothesis regarding the Praying mantis being hungry story, comparing her to fruit flies. Whereas male are relentless in their pursuit of especially beautiful and sexy fruit flies, causing her to nearly starve for lack of time to eat, the mating ritual among the praying mantis appears to involve much more mutuality.

If Sea Mammals Were 'Fearsome', Is Man 'Fearsome' Too?

A new study has settled the debate about whether or not some large marine reptiles were warm-blooded or endothermic, giving them a considerable advantage to swim fast over long distances and conquer life in cold regions.

French researchers have researched creatures that lives in the sea 25-60 million years ago, determining that many now-extinct marine reptiles were warm blooded. See Science Daily.

We can’t help noting that the warm-blooded animals are described twice in the press release as ‘fearsome’, conjuring up visions of predators and monsters, Jonah’s whale ready to swallow us in one gulp. Now man’s need to triumph over nature has infiltrated factual science writing.

Without waxing poetically or with naivete on a theoretically benevolent nature of sea creatures living 25 million years ago, we’d like to point out that we’re talking about dolphins, a beloved group of creatures with no history of being ‘fearsome’, unless provoked.

It’s believed that dolphins were land creatures that migrated to sea living, helping to explain how the planet ended up with mammals in the sea.

Moral Justification for Killing Everything In Sight

Could we please not automatically assume that all of nature’s creatures are ‘fearsome’, as a moral justification for man’s need to triumph over them and render them extinct if he chooses? That philosophy came from Aristotle and monotheism, not science.

Inquiring Minds | Liberals and Atheists Have Higher IQs

RedTracker| A study published last month says that more intelligent people are statistically more likely to exhibit social values and religious and political preferences that are novel to the human species in evolutionary history. Liberalism and atheism, and for men (but not women), preference for sexual exclusivity correlate with higher intelligence, as measured by IQ.

The study categories two sets of preferences and values: “evolutionarily novel” to describe preferences and values that humans are not biologically designed to have, and “evolutionarily familiar.”

'Glow-in-the-dark' Sperm Reveal Sexy Secrets

This is the reproductive tract (less ovaries) of female D. melanogaster initially mated to GFP-sperm male then remated to RFP-sperm male. Green sperm heads have left the storage organs and can be seen mixing with red sperm heads in the bursa. (Credit: Scott Pitnick, Syracuse University)RoseTracker| Creative thinking inspired Syracuse University biology professors to genetically alter the heads of fruitflies to be green or red. Because most of nature is promiscuous, meaning that the female mates with more than one male, in search for the best sperm for her offspring — it’s been very difficult for researchers to keep track of events within her body.

Besides the female practicing her own Darwinian supreme sperm selection, rival sperm are competing to fertilize her eggs. We know that these rival sperm will even form teams, supporting their guy’s sperm, much like a hockey team bands together for victory.
