The American Dream Will Be Redefined in Cultural Creative Terms

Building on yesterday’s post around narcissism, today we have a “current state of the American dream” read from Vanity Fair magazine.

In the past decades the American Dream has been redefined from a sense of opportunity to succeed and build a better life, in a relatively free relationship with government, class, caste and social heirarchy to making it big, amassing wealth and all things shiny.

Achieving the American Dream has moved from working hard, managing expectations and generating real value, to “pre-approved for the good life”, just because we are Americans.

Now we are reconsidering and redefining the American Dream, as a nation.

Our Modern identity is shifting to one governed by Cultural Creative values and ideals. This subset of beliefs and values, born in the Sixties and Seventies, will gain major traction in the 21st century.

Cultural Creative values will not be defined in a single paradigm, because we have subsets within that group, just as the Moderns subdivide. The most interesting group for me is the Cultural Creatives emerging from a Modern identity, the aging fence-sitters of the past 10 years.

Bill Gates is an example of this person. Smart Sensuality women are the big new ideal in this emerging cultural shift.

Beyond environmental concerns and a deep-seated focus on defining the “well-lived life”, the Modern assumption that he/she who has the most things “wins” will be under serious scrutiny, as we re-establish the assumptions of our daily existence. Anne
