Lupita Nyong'o Steps Up To Save Africa's Elephants

Lupita Nyong’o Interview with Larry Madowo

Oscar-winning actor and global beauty ambassador for L’Oreal Lupita Nyong’o returned to Kenya this week as the first Kenyan ever to win an Oscar. The African beauty just wrapped up filming her latest movie ‘Queen of Katwe’ in South Africa and will debut in ‘Star Wars’ later this year. Lupita engages here in a delightful, reflective interview with Kenyan journalist Larry Madowo.

AOC loved Lupita before she won an Oscar. But to open an email from the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, where we support orphan elephants, and read that the stellar woman Lupita was there — as evidenced in this magnificent photo — brought tears to our eyes.

In addition to joining WildAid on behalf of elephants, Lupita will be promoting women’s causes, acting and the arts in her native Kenya. She also visited Amboseli National Park and filmed public service messages for international distribution in Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, China, Hong Kong, Thailand and the United States.

She also met with Kenya-based African Wildlife Foundation and Save the Elephants who partner on these projects, as well as representatives of Wildlife Direct, and Ol Pejeta and Lewa Conservancies — all groups active in combating poaching in Kenya.

Glamour's Women of the Year Fund Launches The Girls Project To Educate Girls Worldwide

Glamour magazine’s December cover girl Lupita Nyong’o is sharing Glamour Magazine’s Woman of the Year 2014. Other notable women being honored Monday night, November 9 include Chelsea Clinton, Robin Roberts, Sylvia Earle, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Burton, Natalia Vodianova, Samantha Power and Lavern Cox as Glamour Women of the Year 2014. ( See our Sensual Rebel Blog post on Orange Is The New Black star Lavern Cox and her new documentary ‘The T Word’. )

Today we celebrate Lupita’s latest ad for L’Absolu Rouge lipstick, lensed by Mert & Marcus. Lupita’s clear, confident voice on the subject of embracing her own beauty — thanks to seeing models like Alex Wek — inspire her to become a resounding voice for a broad definition of beauty in America and worldwide. There is no doubt that Lupita is empowering young women everywhere with her confident and joyful, sensitive and psychologically empathetic spirit.

Glamour Magazine’s The Girl Project

The most important news coming out of Monday night’s Glamour magazine Women of the Year awads dinner is the creation of The Girl Project, a collaboration between Glamour readers and supporters and four organizations devoted to keeping girls in school.

“Cindi Leive, Glamour’s editor in chief, said that the magazine started this initiative in part because of recent world events, including the girls kidnapped from their school in Nigeria and the many schools damaged in Gaza,” writes the New York Times.

Glamour will partner with CARE USA, Plan International USA, Girls Inc. and Communities in Schools to distribute the funds.

Malala Also Rebuilding Schools in Gaza

Glamour readers will be joined by Malala Yousafzai, who recently donated her prize of $50,000 from the World’s Children Prize to rebuilding schools in Gaza. Listen to Malala’s speech in Sensual Rebel.

Equally inspired in Anne’s post was news of an innovative project in Kenya where the government will pay a Maasai father nine cows — her bride price — for each daughter he keeps in school.

Toni Garrn for Closed Denim Jeans - #youandmegirl Campaign In Burkina Faso

Hamburg-born, top model Toni Garrn has teamed up with the Hamburg-based denim company Closed and the charity Plan International in a jean collaboration. All profits from the line will provide scholarships for impoverished women in Burkina Faso through Plan International’s ‘Because I’m a Girl’ campaign.

“It is a personal project. In Hamburg, I go to visit both Plan and Closed,” says Garrn, and she also serves as an ambassador for the charity. “I had always sponsored children. At fifteen, I had sponsored two girls through Plan International. I continued talking with the charity because I just thought they did a great job everywhere. They really focus on child protection and education—they don’t just drop food or money. It is more like, ‘How can we make the whole community sustainable? When we leave, are they are better off?’”

Garrn makes it clear that the project is about the charity and supporting girls and women in Burkina Faso, located on Africa’s Ivory Coast — not honing her credentials as a designer.

The BBC reports today that Burkina Faso is the scene of mass protests, calling for a civilian transition of power and the end of President Blaise Compaore’s 27-year rule. While Burkina Faso is at risk for an ebola outbreak, neighboring countries already infected, ebola is not currently a problem in the country.

Take a listen while Toni Garrn explains more about her Closed Jeans collaboration for women and girls in Burkina Faso.

AOC Welcomes Foster Elephant ROROGOI & The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust

AOC Welcomes ROROGOI

There’s a new baby in the house. Her name if ROROGOI and she lives at The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, the most successful orphan-elephant rescue and rehabilitation program in the world. ROROGOI lives in Nairobi, Kenya, also home to The Kibera School for Girls, another AOC/GlamTribale philanthropy project.

The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust was founded in 1977 by Dr. Dame Daphne Sheldrick D.B.E. in honour of the memory of her late husband, famous naturalist and founding Warden of Tsave East National Park, David Leslie William Sheldrick MBE.

From the foundation’s website:

At the heart of the DSWT’s conservation activities is the Orphans’ Project, which has achieved world-wide acclaim through its hugely successful elephant and rhino rescue and rehabilitation program. The Orphans’ Project exists to offer hope for the future of Kenya’s threatened elephant and rhino populations as they struggle against the threat of poaching for their ivory and horn, and the loss of habitat due to human population pressures and conflict, deforestation and drought.

To date the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust has successfully hand-raised over 150 infant elephants and has accomplished its long-term conservation priority by effectively reintegrating orphans back into the wild herds of Tsavo, claiming many healthy wild-born calves from former-orphaned elephants raised in our care.”

Angela Sheldrick In Charge

DSWT is chaired by Daphne Sheldrick and has been run by David and Daphne’s daughter Angela for over a decade. Growing up in Tsavo and later in the Nairobi National Park, Angela has been part of the Trust’s vision from the start, supported by her husband Robert Carr-Hartley and their two boys Taru and Roan, who are passionate about Kenya’s wildlife and eager to ensure that David and Daphne’s legacy continues.

Situated in a corner of Nairobi National Park, the elephant orphange is open every morning for an hour. Tourists from around the globe arrive to watch the orphans, aged up to three years playing in the mud and drinking bottles of milk. Elephants are milk-dependent until the age of three and would die in the wild without intervention from groups like DSWT.

Blake Lively's Preserve Internet Business Embraces Artisans

You are forgiven of you don’t think of former ‘Gossip Girl’ Blake Lively and Martha Stewart as being fast friends. But they are such good friends that Martha stepped in at the 11th hour to make Blake’s wedding to actor Ryan Reynolds a southern success.

Lively is profiled in the August issue of Vogue, lensed in a western-inspired fashion editorial by Mario Testino. GlamTribale’s focus is Lively’s new website Preserve, dedicated to celebrating small quantity, artisan made products. Preserve is part digital magazine, part e-commerce venture, part video blog with an inventory including food, clothes, pillows, dishes, dining-room tables, jewelry and other designs that evoke “a kind of moody-spooky beauty that one associates with Savannah or New Orleans (a favorite place of Lively and Reynolds’s).

Heading over to the Preserve website, the talk is sincere and a bit surprising for a Gossip Girl. Preserve commits 5% of revenues to the Greater Good.

We celebrate and indulge in the treasures both high and low that we feature on Preserve. We are aware that a lot of what we are selling is outlandish in a world where people are starving and have nowhere to sleep. This is a real problem. One that eve  on our high horse we can’t ignore. This is our community. Each of ours.

We have set our first goal of giving 5,000 children a meal, 2000 children a blanket, and 2,700 children a warm hoodie, all within the U.S.

We’re a small, but growing company. Our giving reflects our age. As we mature so will our contribution both fiscally and physically.

We acknowledge that we are human and are flawed. But please accept our intention is to do something pure. So we ask you, let this be a conversation. Help us grow. Help us gove. Please critique us, teach us and be patient with us in the process, as ultimately we are all in this, this spinning sphere, together.

Philadelphia Meets Malibu. Anne Meets Kathy Eldon As Creative Visions Rolls Into Philadelphia October 2, 2013

I was so moved yesterday to receive this email invite from Kathy Eldon. We’ve been in digital contact for almost a year now — introduced by Charles Kochel of Abacus Wealth Partners, a B corp specializing in managing the financial assets of clients with progressive values.

It’s Kathy’s son Dan Eldon, the photojournalist stoned to death by an angry in Mogadishu in July 1993, who has been my personal muse for a very long time. Every investigation of a personal interest of mine tends to have a line that intersects the lives of Dan and Kathy Eldon.

For example, I’ve long been fascinated with the origin of human civilization in Africa, as determined by famed members of the Louis and Mary Leakey family. Kathy worked for Louis Leakey when she and her husband Mike lived in Nairobi with Dan and sister Amy. Leakey’s granddaughter Lara was one of Dan’s closest friends.

Inexplicably in the beginning, I’ve been very drawn to Kibera, one of the world’s largest slums, located outside Nairobi. The Eldon famly lived 3/4 of a mile from Kibera and were actively involved with events and artists living there.

Today, 5% of GlamTribale’s revenues are dedicated to providing sanitary pads to school girls in Kibera, where significant numbers of our beads are produced.

Other intersections are too powerful to ignore between myself and the Eldon clan. ABC Philadelphia filmed our GlamTribale shop in Lancaster on the 20th anniversary of Dan’s death. We talk about Dan lavishly in our marketing materials, so — who knows — perhaps he sent a lightening bolt to ABC Action News. Stranger things have happened in my life.

I’m thrilled beyond words to meet Kathy Eldon for real at this exciting Creative Visions event on Oct. 2 in Philadelphia. Kathy’s new book ‘In the Heart of Life: A Memoir’ will be published on September 24. It seems that an in-depth interview is in order.  ~ Anne
