IMF's Lagarde to stand trial in Tapie case Reuters

France's Christine Lagarde, now head of the International Monetary Fund, has been ordered to stand trial for her role in a 2008 state payout to businessman Bernard Tapie. At this time, IMF spokesman Gerry Rice said the board has complete confidence in Lagarde's ability to continue in her duties. The strong proponent of international women's rights was reappointed to a second five-year term in January 2016.

Lagarde is accused of negligence in the settlement negotiated by then conservative French president Nicolas Sarkozy, a friend of Tapie, who said he was defrauded after selling his stake in the sports company Adidas to Credit Lyonnais in 1993.

Roger Ailes Is Out as Head of Fox News New York Times

Roger Ailes, potentially the most influential private citizen in America, in his role as chairman and chief executive of Fox News, resigned Thursday as the sexual harassment scandal swirled ever more violently around him. Rupert Murdoch, the 85-year-old media mogul who recently married Jerry Hall and co-founded Fox News with Ailes will assume a temporary role as both chairman and CEO until a replacement for Ailes is found.

In his resignation letter, Mr. Ailes did not reference the sexual harassment lawsuit filed two weeks ago by Gretchen Carlson but did cite his commitment to promoting women, which is not a claim made by the nearly 20 women who have now accused Ailes of sexual harassment : “I take particular pride in the role that I have played advancing the careers of the many women I have promoted to executive and on-air positions. Many of these talented journalists have deservedly become household names known for their intelligence and strength, whether reporting the news, fair and balanced, and offering exciting opinions on our opinion programs.”

The lawyer for Ms. Carlson, Nancy Erika Smith, released a statement after hearing of Ailes' resignation, saying that, in part, “We hope that all businesses now understand that women will no longer tolerate sexual harassment and reputable companies will no longer shield those who abuse women.”

Sources: Megyn Kelly Told Murdoch Investigators That Roger Ailes Sexually Harassed Her New York Magazine

FOX News mega star Megyn Kelly has been criticized for remaining silent on the sexual harassment lawsuit whirling around Roger Ailes.

As New York law firm Paul, Weiss, Kelly conducts an investigation into alleged improprieties of Ailes in the running of FOX News, sources say that Kelly has informed in detail to investigator that Ailes sexually harassed her as a young reporter a decade ago.

Kelly is reported to be in contract negotiations and with Bill O'Reilly said to be seriously considering retirement, Kelly is gold to the network's future.

According to two sources, Monday afternoon lawyers for 21st Century Fox gave Ailes a deadline of August 1 to resign or face being fired for cause. Ailes’s legal team — which now includes Susan Estrich, former campaign manager for Michael Dukakis — has yet to respond to the offer. Ailes has also received advice on strategy from Donald Trump and Rudy Giuliani, sources say.

Why Men Want to Marry Melanias and Raise Ivankas New York Times

Today, 40 percent of women are their family’s primary breadwinners, and nearly 80 percent of Americans agree that women should not return to traditional roles in society. A third still say it’s best for small children if Mom doesn’t work at all. The Republican Party has particularly struggled to accept this new model, and still pushes back on women’s progress by opposing policies that would help women work and plan their families: things like federally funded child care, paid parental leave and access to birth control.
And like Mr. Trump praising his daughter’s business acumen, men want different things in their wives than in their daughters. Changing gender roles look less threatening when it’s their children who benefit. According to a survey published by Maria Shriver’sShriver Report, American men listed “intelligence” as the top quality they valued in both a wife and a daughter, but then the responses split: More men said they wanted their wives to be attractive and sweet than said the same about their female children. For daughters, men ranked being independent, strong and principled as more important qualities than those same characteristics in wives. Two-thirds of men want an independent daughter, but only one in three wants an independent wife. Fourteen percent of men said they wanted a wife who was a homemaker; just 5 percent said the same about their daughters.

Daddies, 'Dates,' and the Girlfriend Experience: Welcome to the Prostitution Economy Vanity Fair US

If increasing numbers of young people are selling their bodies online for countless reasons -- student debt, luxury labels, top-tier museum memberships -- is this an example of American, entrepreneurial skills at their best or exploitation?

Geraldine’s, a swank spot in the Hotel Van Zandt in Austin, Texas is a top hangout spot for tech guys. Vanity Fair grabs a table and talks turkey over ribs about “dates” with “daddies.” As an appetizer: “They want the girlfriend experience, without having to deal with an actual girlfriend.”

“The girlfriend experience” is the term women in the sex trade use for a service involving more than just sex. “They want the perfect girlfriend—in their eyes,” says Miranda, the young woman at our table.* “She’s well groomed, cultured, classy, able to converse about anything—but not bringing into it any of her real-world problems or feelings.”

The threats and abuse outspoken Pakistani women receive BBC

The apparent 'honour killing' by her brother of Pakistan's Qandeel Baloch has unleashed a fury of conversation over women's rights and the freedom to speak in a nation close to the bottom of global surveys on the quality of women's lives.

BBC journalists discuss their own experiences as women in Urdu. Amber Shamsi explains: Some months ago, I published a story on Qandeel Baloch for BBC Urdu in which I identified her as a cultural landmark of sorts, a provocateur. Inevitably, the abuse followed. BBC Urdu and I were accused of having "nothing better to cover" for giving space to a "slut" who was disgracing the country.

We quote lavishly from Maajid Nawaz's jawdropping essay about the killing at the bottom of this page.

Theresa May Likely to Be Britain's Next Premier as Andrea Leadsom Quits Race New York Times

Andrea Leadsom's metaphorical slap at Theresa May's ability to lead as Britain's new prime minister, given her not having blood children, backfired in England. The party turned turned on Leadsom in a heartbeat.
