Women Will Become Majority of US Workers in Fall 2009

RedTracker| American women held 49.83 percent of the nation’s 132 million jobs in June 2009 and they’re gaining the vast majority of new jobs being created. At the current pace, women will become the majority of workers in the US in October or November 2009.

The only parts of the economy growing at present are health care, education and government, fields traditionally dominated by women, writes reporter Dennis Cauchon for USA Today.

In the period from December 2007 to June 2009:

• Men have lost 74 percent of the 6.4 million jobs erased since the recession began in December 2007.

• Men have lost more than 3 milion jobs in construction and manufacturing.
In local government’s 14.6 million workforce:
• Cities, schools, water authorities and other local jurisdictions have eliminated jobs for 86,000 men.
• Simultaneously, these same organizations have added 167,000 women to the payrolls, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
When the economy improves, economists expect men to reclaim a slight majority of American jobs.
