Women Makeup First Ever Majority Whitney Biennial 2010

The world of art news much be in such a state of shock that stunned fingers can’t meet up with the keyboard.

The just released list of artists participating in the 2010 Whitney Biennial is a shocker for the art world. If you’re reading this post on your iPhone, sit down.

Women artists make up the majority at the 2010 Whitney Biennial.

Whitney curator Francesco Bonami said that he and associate curator, Gary Carrion-Murayari, “didn’t look for women artists. They were just in front of our eyes. It wasn’t conscious at all.” He added that it was “misleading” to think about the upcoming Biennial “in these terms.”  via New York Magazine

We’re celebrating women who are coming, one a day until we’ve introduced them all. Good, bad or otherwise, this is a major day for women artists, and while we appreciate that all participants were chosen on merit by a gender-blind committee …come on, this day is worth a rah rah! Anne
