The Trouser Files: New Restrictions in Indonesia's West Aceh District
Beyond the Veil| Muslim women in Indonesia’s West Aceh district will be banned from wearing “tight” trousers or jeans under new regulations.
Beginning in 2010, any woman wearing trousers or jeans deemed too tight will have to immediately change into a government-issed skirt. The offending garment will be chopped into pieces.
Theoretically, non-Muslims aren’t affected by the new law.
Loose-fitting trousers can be worn under a skirt, as long as no part of the ankle is visible.
