Only Republican South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham joined the 12 Democratic members of the Senate Judiciary Committee to move Sonia Sotomayor forward as the ntion’s first Latina justice.
“This is the first Latina woman in the history of the United States to be selected for the Supreme Court. Now that is a big deal,” Graham said. “I would not have chosen her, but I understand why President Obama did. I gladly give her my vote because I think she meets the qualifications test that was used in [Antonin] Scalia and [Ruth Bader] Ginsburg.” via Politico
Without making assumptions regarding Sotomayor’s future rulings, the stage is set for the next court nomination which could set the stage for the battle of all judiciary battles. A fight to maintain or reset the ideological tone of the US Supreme Court is coming in the next few years.
