Republicans Cut "Forcible Rape" Only Stipulation From Abortion-Funding Bill

RedTracker| WaPo reports that Republican lawmakers have removed the term “forcible rape” from an antiabortion bill in Congress.

Called No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, the bill seeks to permanently bar federal funds from being used to subsidize abortions. It allows exceptions in cases where pregnancy as resulted from incest or when the life of the mother is threatened without an abortion.

The modified term will now allow exceptions in all cases of rape.

A spokesman for Rep. Christopher H. Smith (R-N.J.), a chief sponsor of the bill, said women’s groups had “misconstrued” the intention of the rape clause.
