Peppermint Effective In Relieving Irritable Bowel Syndrome Symptoms

RoseTracker| Peppermint helps to relieve Irritable Bowel Syndrome — which affects up to 20% of the population — by activating an ‘anti-pain’ channel in the colon. University of Adelaide researchers have shown that ‘peppermint acts through a specific anti-pain channel called TRPM8 to reduce pain sensing fibers, particularly those activated by mustard and chilli. The discovery is potentially the first step in determining a new type of mainstream clinical treatment for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).”

Dr Stuart Brierley says that while symptoms of IBS can appear after eating fatty and spicy foods, coffee and alcohol, there is most probably a link between IBS and a former bout of gastroenteritis. This condition leaves nerve pain fibers in a heightened state of being easily triggered and producing pain. Researchers believe the peppermint study results may develop new treatments for IBS, which can go on for years. via Science Daily
