In this file photo dated Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2010 Laura Dekker hoists a flag of The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society on her boat in the harbor of Den Osse, southwest Netherlands. The 14-year-old Dutch girl will try to become the youngest person to sail solo around the world when she sets off from Portugal on Saturday Aug. 21, 2010. via FOX NewsRedTracker| It’s believed that Laura Dekker set sail today from Gibralter, avoiding any media attention.

“She said goodbye to her father and friends and she sailed away into the horizon,” Holland’s MasMedia company, which has exclusive TV rights to film her voyage, said.

Laura was scheduled to depart from a resort in southwestern Portugal but Marijke Schaaphok, MasMedia’s director, said Portugual issues permits to sail ocean vessels only to people 18 or older.

Laura is now en route to Spain’s Canary Islands or Portugal’s Madeira Island, depending on the wind, she said.
