Gender-Role Attitudes Drive Decision to Create Permanent Unions

RedTracker| Economist Almudena Sevilla-Sanz from Oxford University set out to query the relationship between marriage and cohabiting rates in developed nations and gender-based attitudes around home-focused responsibilities.

The answer: yes, attitudes are related to marriage and cohabitation rates.

13,500 men and women aged between 20 and 45 from 12 countries were interviewed and then ranked according to an “egalitarian index”. Researchers probed attitudes about gender, housework and childcare responsibilities.

Before sharing the list from top to bottom, let me stress that marriage rates are plummeting in Europe. Sevilla-Sanz is surveyng marriage AND cohabitation: Norway and Sweden top the egalitarian index. Moving down the scale: Britain, United States, Netherlands, Ireland, New Zealand.

At the borrom of the egalitarian India are Japan, Germany and Australia, coming in last. via Reuters
