Emergency Contraception Now Free at Any Age in Wales

RedTracker| What a difference an ocean makes. As American Conservatives lead the charge to defund Planned Parenthood, the government of Wales is taking a diametrically opposed tactic in fighting teen pregnancy. Emergency contraception can now be obtained without charge across Wales and at any age.

Before you scream ‘socialists’, the program is led by ministers, who say that pharmacists have a vital role in reducing unwanted pregnancies.

The same program already exists in England, although the woman must make two visits for each pill. A ruling to change that system is presently tied up in British courts and the political system. Emergency contraception has been available in Scotland since 2008.

Health minister Edwina Hart announced the move last November, saying she wanted professional advice available without appointment and “easily accessible within the 72-hour time span necessary for emergency contraception to be most effective”. via BBC News

Planned Parenthood curent dispenses the morning after pill in the US, at a cost of $10-$70 says their website. In America pharmacists are allowed to refuse the morning after pill on secular grounds in many states.

In 2005, the Arizona Daily Star reported that a 20-year-old woman living in Tucson Arizona was raped. Over three frantic days of calling dozens of Tucson pharmacies trying to fill a prescription for emergency contraception. When she finally found a pharmacy carrying the prescription, the pharmacist on duty refused to dispense it, and so the five-day time period passed when a simple pill widely available around the world could have helped her.

Yesterday we reported that one in five family units in America has children from more than one father. Given the proposed changes that the War on Women wants, that number will climb significantly as poor and middle class women are denied their most fundamental rights to reproductive health care.
