Blue Fin Tuna & Polar Bear Protection Voted 'No' at CITES
GreenBeings| In spite of drastic statistics about declining blue fin tuns supplies, the U.N. Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, known as CITES, failed to pass a ban on blue fin tuna fishing. Nor was any action taken on procteting polar bears, also in decline. via Scientific American
The Japanese press reports that China was instrumental in promoting a ‘no’ vote on the ban.
“We are relieved with the results,” Japanese fisheries minister Hirotaka Akamatsu said at a news conference Friday. “Japan now has a responsibility to take the lead in managing marine resources because we insisted (the ban was not necessary).” via asahi.com
