Belgium Puts Burqa Vote to Parliament on April 22

Beyond the Veil| A parliamentary committee in Brussels voted unanimously to put a burqa-ban bill before the full parliament on April 22. If passed Belgium, home to around 650,000 Muslims, would be the first European country to impose a ban. Many European countries are entertaining a similar ban.

Announcing the Belgian vote, six parliamentarians from the French-speaking MR liberal party said the principle of “recognise to know” trumped other considerations on the issue. Freely admitting that the move is one against any and all forms of extremism, Daniel Bacquelaine, who proposed the bill said:

“We cannot allow someone to claim the right to look at others without being seen. It is necessary that the law forbids the wearing of clothes that totally mask and enclose an individual.”

Punishment for wearing the veil is a week in jail or a fine. via Express UK
