Bananas Join the Global Fight Against AIDS

Beyond the Veil| Mother Nature may have delivered an ironic discovery in the fight against AIDS.

In laboratory tests, BanLec, the lectin found in bananas, was as potent as two current anti-HIV drugs. Based on the findings published March 19 in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, BanLec may become a less expensive new component of applied vaginal microbicides.

Jumping over a host of challenges around distribution, health education, folklore and fear of impeding pregnancy, the discovery is positively awesome and could quickly become a major tool in fighting AIDS,  the top killer of women worldwide.
