RedTracker| According to Slate magazine Angela Merkel, the “soft-spoken, even-tempered, and frankly dull pragmatist who has compared her economic program to that of a Swabian housewife”, has become the de facto head of Europe.

Merkel will use some of her soft-glove diplomacy with President Obama today and in a rare address before both houses of Congress. Chancellor Merkel is only the second German chancellor accorded this honor, after Konrad Adenauer in 1957.

Merkel’s speech will focus on climate change, transatlantic ties and the downfall of Communism in Europe. Talks with President Obama will focus on divisive and challenging topics like Afghanistan and Iran. The Middle East, financial reform and global economic recovery are also on the agenda.

Mrs Merkel is also likely to push for stronger US backing for a deal on tackling climate change in Copenhagen.
