Fidgeting Your Way to Fitness Science Daily Science Daily

American business wants us to take fewer trips to the watercooler, but science suggests there’s an added health benefit to incidental activity of 30 minutes a day for cardiovascular fitness and long-term health. Because so many Canadians don’t engage in regular exercise, Ashlee McGuire, the study’s lead researcher and a graduate student in the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies, examined the health of people, based on their daily routines, down to a minute level.

Activity levels were gauged using an accelerometer, which measures the duration and intensity of movement. Participants wore the accelerometer for a week and also took part in a test to measure their cardiorespiratory fitness.
