In an absolutely stunning announcement, the Telegraph UK reports that the Vatican is about to change its policy on the use of condoms in the fight against AIDS. Pope Benedict will say that it is acceptable to use a prophylacttic when the intention is to “reduce the risk of infection” from AIDS.
Restating the Catholic Church’s staunch objections to contraception because it interferes with the creation of life, the Pope will argue that using a condom to preserve life and avoid death can be a responsible act — even outside marriage.
These statements will come in a book to be published by the Vatican next week, based on the first face-to-face interview given by a Pope.
As recently as March 17, 2009 Pope Benedict said that the distribution of condoms ‘aggravates’ the AIDS crisis. The decision may be not entirely humanitarian. The Catholic Church competes with Islam in Africa. Neither birth control or abortion are forbidden in Islam. Individuals may argue this statement but both are permitted in Islam today.
