Humans have long believed in the healing properties of plants and flowers. And a recent study at Kansas State University, researchers confirmed that plants — specifically potted plants rather than cut flowers, which will die in a few days — lessen stress, promote positive feelings and provide distraction from pain among patients recovering from abdominal surgery.
Patients housed in rooms with plants experienced lower intakes of pain medication, lower heart rate and blood pressure and higher satisfaction with their recovery than patients in rooms without plants or flowers. Plant-rooms scored the highest, with patients getting involved in the nurturing process by watering, pruning and moving their natural “friends” into better light.
