Collage: Wings

The wings of birds and bats are but extended hands. As children, we mimic this in play, putting our hands together to create the shadow of a bird on the wall. We stretch out our arms and hands and race around the room, pretending to be birds or planes.

We have imagined a spectacular mythology of winged creatures— sphinxes, phoenixes, fairies, pegasi, chimerae, dragons, griffins…

We covet their wings.
So we invented airplanes, helicopters, and rocketships.
Wondrous, that those big heavy metal machines actually get off the ground at all.

When we dream of flight, we dream of freedom.
I fly in my dreams. It’s breathtaking, seeing the world’s terrain stretch out below, far away. It’s tenuous, I could fall any moment. It’s only air holding me up.

Winged creatures are among the most vulnerable in the environment. The presence of birds, butterflies, and dragonflies is an indication of ecological health. Their absence is a warning. A “canary in the coalmine”.

Do you see them around often, where you live?
Do you pay them any attention?
Do you have dreams in which you’re flying?
And have you ever gone to the airport with your loved one, just to watch planes land and take off?
(Try it if you haven’t yet!)

Love,
Feanne
