Feanne's Hand's: Anne's Response

Note from Anne: Thank you so very much Feanne!!  I love your choice of subject matter and the overall aesthetic of your collage. I’m particularly pleased with the way you’ve woven literature into your presentation.

I’ve encouraged Feanne to ask questions of us, provoking conversations around her collage elements and intellectual point of view.  Please feel free to offer an alternative one in your comments. Believe me, when I say that I want to create a salon here on A of C. We value your contribution.

Point 1: physical vs. digital connection to art

For example, my artistic talent lies in making glass paintings with a pink flamingo photo underneath.  Anne can’t draw a straight line to save her life.

If you can imagine, I was excused from art class in 7th grade and put in an advanced study mathematics test project out of Yale or Princeton. I distinctly recall my art teacher encouraging me to join this brainiac club, because “you’re not creative.”

My art teacher’s assessment of me defined me for at least 10 years, until I became the manager of University Press at Buffalo. Surrounded by crazy art types, forever quitting on me, I learned how to do everything, including silkscreen printing. When I produced my first poster … well, it was unusually good. Suddenly, I saw that I had creative talent, although again I was in a graphic design media, relying on tools to help me.

For me, digital media and tools of creation are my liberation and not preferable to something hand made, which I value highly from others. The extent of my hand-making is quilts and needlepoint, and neither is free-form art.

Digital media allows me to express my creativity fully. How about you?

Point 2: hands as destructive and threatening

Because of Feanne’s spirit, her images are calming, beautiful, connective tissue … a lovely digital caress, wouldn’t you say?

If I did a free association on hands … I would have the image of my own hands, because I constantly receive compliments on them.

At least some of the other images would be harsh and threatening. When my mother disciplined my oldest brother, she always used a fly swatter or ruler. Not once did she use those implements on me. With me she only used her hand.

Much of my adult life, I’ve marveled at this difference in corporal punishment with her two children. My hand collage would be visually more disturbing than Feanne’s.

Please note that while my mother is alive, she does not have a computer, not even email. Based on messages to me from you, I feel it’s important to raise certain topics in our new online journey, without being too explicit in the details. We will seek balance on subjects involving self-revelation.

Feanne and I reserve the right to edit comments that we believe are too aggressive or too self-revealing towards others. Talking about yourself is just fine. We encourage it.

What you think of Feanne’s collage project? What do you want from us going forward?

I suggested to her just now that, perhaps after six months, we all choose our 3-5 favorite collages via voting, and we create our own responses … an online, multi-media art exhibit of sorts, based on Feanne’s themes.

This is just one idea. Please share yours.

Love also,
Anne
