Collage: Sky

I end up staring at the sky a lot. Especially when the cloud formations are interesting, or when I see the trails of jet planes— white lines crossing the sky and dissipating at the tail-end. I know the scientists have already explained this, but it’s still so amazing to me that when I’m looking at the sky, I’m actually looking at outer space. Did you ever really see it that way? If you’re something of a dreamy hippie like me, this thought can be pretty distracting. Also, it will make you feel quite tiny and inconsequential. Hello, vast universe out there.

Some people will accuse me of having my head in the clouds. Yes, I do have a tendency to look out the car window at the sky, instead of paying attention to where I am going. (This is why I have a poor sense of navigation.) But let me tell you, it’s not waste of time. An expansive view— such as a view of sky— provokes expansive, creative thinking. Makes sense, right? The mind responds to what the eye sees.

In my interior design course, we’ve discussed how vistas (views) are essential, to make a room psychologically sound. Want to drive someone crazy? Put them in a windowless, vista-less room. Of course a room with a real view of the outside is ideal, but these days, that is a luxury. At the very least, there should be a picture or some artwork hanging on the wall— anything to provide the sense of a vista, of expanded space.

Don’t get me started on disappointing windows— you know, windows that only have a view of the adjacent building’s wall. Those windows are better covered up with nice curtains.

Here are a couple more photographs I took of the sky, one day, when the clouds were just so delightfully shaped that I couldn’t resist:

Next time you’re outside, treat your eyes and your spirit to a few moments of sky-watching.

Love,
Feanne
