America’s First Families

After the New England Patriots sealed the deal in Sunday’s NFL Super Bowl win, Vanity Fair crowned star quarterback/supermodel couple Tom Brady and wife Gisele Bündchen as America’s Third Family.

Vanity Fair puts the Knowles-Carters, Beyoncé her musician husband, Jay Z, and their darling baby girl Blue Ivy in the premiere position.

The nation’s Second Family is, “obviously” — writes Vanity Fair — the Obamas, United States president Barack, his lawyer wife, Michelle, their two children, Malia and Sasha.

Third place has been up for grabs — until now.

New York Times writer Damon Winter profiled Tom Brady and his family in an in-depth story for the Magazine. Read on Tom Brady Cannot Stop. (Note, the NYT is a pay wall, but readers get 10 free articles per month w/o registering.)

Republican Presidential Hopeful (Again) Mike Huckabee Is Gunning For Beyoncé

Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee is gunning for Vanity Fair’s First Couple female half Beyoncé. Then again, the very Christian, high-moral ground Huckabee also calls Jay Z a “pimp” in his new book about American Christian political identity.

Salon takes up the story in Evangelicals’ racist “purity” culture: What’s really behind Huckabee’s Beyoncé slur.

In an interview promoting his recent book about American Christian political identity, Mike Huckabee commented that he doesn’t understand how Barack and Michelle Obama let their daughters listen to Beyoncé. He told ABC that he doesn’t think Beyoncé is wholesome, referring to Biblical ideas about holiness, saying, “what you put into your brain is also important, as well as what you put into your body.” Huckabee, a white man, seems to take particular focus on Beyoncé, stating in his book that it seems her husband, Jay Z, has crossed the line from husband to pimp in “sexually exploiting her body.”
