1. Chelsea Clinton will join NBC Nightly News immediately as a full-time special correspondent. Political daughter Jenna Bush Hager, is has been a reporter for the Today show since 2009.  Over at NBC cable channel MSNBC, presidential-candidate daughter Meghan McCain provides political commentary.  Chelsea Clinton will focus on people making a difference and will also contribute to NBC’s new ‘Rock Center with Brian Williams’.

2. Drinking two or more sugar-sweetened beverages a day has been linked not only to weight gain but a significantly boosted woman’s risk for developing heart disease and diabetes. These risks are independent of weight gain in women. Researchers also determined that drinking two or more sodas — or iced tea southern style, or sugar-laden energy drinks — promotes more belly fat in women only. The finings were presented Sunday at the American Heart Association’s annual meeting in Orlando, Fla.

Melancholia and the End of the World

Are Sad Women the Prettiest? Kirsten Dunst in Melancholia

In Melancholia, a beautiful movie about the end of the world, Justine and Michael are celebrating their marriage at a sumptuous party in the home of her sister Claire, and brother-in-law John. Despite Claire’s best efforts, the wedding is a fiasco, with family tensions mounting and relationships fraying. Meanwhile, a planet called Melancholia is heading directly towards Earth.

Writing that Charlotte Gainbourg’s character is the easier one to relate to, the Gloss says that everything about Kirsten Dunst is remarkable in the movie. Charlotte Gainbourgh’s character? Not so much.

Culturally, we romanticize sad women in a way we don’t happy women. Zelda Fitzgerald. Eddie Sedgwick. Marilyn Monroe (especially Marilyn Monroe). There are probably other women just as pretty, but people are less inclined to think about the sublime beauty of Mary Tyler Moore or Doris Day or any of the other women who seem okay. Perhaps that goes along with the way men seem less invested in a woman’s sense of humor because when we see people with a positive outlook on the world, people who seem functional, we assume they need us less. And they probably legitimately do need us less, even if what we think they need us for is to shake them until they see that their life is fine. They certainly do not need anyone to give them a bath as Kirstin Dunst’s character does.

Hear prolific Spanish auteur Pedro Almodóvar muse in a short film about femininity and beauty in light of his current macabre pulp fiction movie, The Skin I Live In.

Versace’s Fashion Values

Ami Sioux for NewsweekDonatella Versace As Modern Values Woman

Donatella Versace’s new well-priced H&M collection is premiering as an iconic inspiration of the brand. Versace tells The Daily Beast:

“I said I wanted to do the iconic pieces of Versace, Versace through history until now,” Donatella says, sitting on a couch in her corner office at the company’s headquarters, with a cigarette dangling from her mouth. “I wanted to show the young people what is Versace. I was expecting H&M to tell me, ‘No, you can’t do this,’ but I gave them some sample, and they came back with something very similar. If you look very close you can see it’s not the same, but three meters away you really get confused about which one is the original.”

Versace’s H&M Collection includes a palm-tree-print dress ($129) with matching leggings ($29.95) There’s a thigh-high metallic party dress ($249). For men, there’s a zebra-print jacket and matching jeans ($100 for both). And there are couch cushions ($29.95) with that iconic Medusa logo. The highly-affordable collection channels Gianni goes to Las Vegas, making it a tribute to Modern values.

Donatella Versace has guided her company through tough times in recent years, with the Italian symbol of Modern values producing stellar collections the past two years. Besides returning to Versace’s flashy, strong-woman roots, the company also cut marketing costs, ad budgets and laid off about 300 people, or a quarter of the company.

Anne has used Versace as an example of a Modern values woman, trying to help readers understand her use of terms like Smart Sensuality women and Cultural Creatives, and how these women are different. Read on in AOC Apple Valley.

Allegra and Donatella VersaceThe turning point in Donatella Versace’s life came in 2004, at an 18th birthday party of her daughter Allegra. Mom flew to rehab that night, attempting to rid herself of a cocaine addiction that made her manic and irrational.

“The only thing she complained about,” Vogue Italia Franca Sozzani told The Daily Beast “was not being able to wear high heels. Donatella said: “I can give up anything, but not my high heels.” Sozzani describes Donatella as “totally ironic and self-aware”.

Brooks Brothers Flatiron NYC

Brooks Brothers unveils a new store in New York’s Flatiron district. With echoes of Ralph Lauren, the new Brooks Brothers Flatiron Shop targets college students and young professionals with a lifestyle-driven, old-money, traditional values environment.

When one looks closely, the styling is more on edge says Lou Amendola, chief merchandising officer. WWD reports that a men’s navy pin-striped suit is shown with a two-tone puffy vest and a bow tie. A women’s sweater dress is merchandised over a noniron white shirt. “The customer doesn’t know those rules,” referring to the rules of retail and styling.
