Sara Sampaio Graciously Fires Back At Jezebel's Erin Gloria Ryan

Victoria’s Secret model Sara Sampaio sent a candid, confrontational message to Jezebel’s Erin Gloria Ryan regarding the short but attention-getting headline about her: Helpful Victoria’s Secret Reminder: Even Models Hate Themselves

Ryan’s post was in response to a brief video message by Sara Sampaio that addresses to what many have called online bullying about her very thin physique. Can we ALL take a time out please!!!

Where Jezebel gets off saying that Sampaio’s comments reflect the reality that even models hate themselves is headline-grabbing poppycock. NOTHING in Sara Sampaio’s brief comments suggest that pseudo-psychologist Ryan is watching the same video that I am. Note that I am fast to criticize Victoria’s Secret, but this is not one of those moments.

For background on this rather absurd, body-image, ping pong match, Victoria’s Secret was recently criticized for their ‘Perfect Body’ campaign. Your truly signed the petition calling out my former alma mater for their tone-deaf campaign that undermined women’s body confidence. VS pulled the campaign, renamed it and released a few short videos — Sara Sampaio’s being one — talking about her body shape being different from Candice Swanepoel’s. Hence the curvy-hands motion — a gesture that I’ve made more than once in life talking about other women.

Sara Sampaio then fired back at Ryan with her own confidant-woman moxie. Sampaio projects far more diplomacy and restraint than Jezebel has demonstrated in a lifetime:

“I think sites like Jezebel have been great for women’s rights. I wouldn’t take my reaction to that one bad article as a sign that I dislike Jezebel.  One article doesn’t represent all the great work they have done. They just took a short video clip, that was part of a much larger interview, and used it to try to twist my words and make a point. I’m over it. I just think that as women we need to support each other and not try to bring each other down. It goes beyond women and feminism, but to all society.”

Addressing Erin Gloria Ryan directly, Sampaio also writes:

Dear Erin from Jezebel, I don’t hate myself! I was actually taught by my family to respect and love myself and indeed others! I feel sorry that you were not able to see beyond your own self-serving interest to sensationalise a story, by creating a negative spin on a positive message and making a foregone conclusion about a young ‘model’ you have never met before!

Victoria's Secret Pulls 'Perfect Body' Campaign Days Before Annual Fashion Show Flies To London

Brits Say ‘No’ To Victoria’s Secret ‘Perfect Body’ Campaign

Call me stupified!! I woke up this morning, having dreamed deeply about being in a retail setting, with events out of sync. Wondering how I would explain the dream to my guy, who manages to ask me every detail of my life as I emerge from this very difficult 2014, I said to myself “It felt as if I was back at Victoria’s Secret.”

I’m speaking of the vibe in the dream … the “I love this brand, but not where it is going vibe. I don’t belong in this business anymore … after 10 years as its fashion director and head of product development. The Victoria’s Secret brand no longer speaks to American women in that ‘I understand you’ voice. “

Besides a fleet of the most expensive Angels in the world, the Victoria’s Secret brand was moving into the advertising/marketing business of flaw-fixing.

Sadly, I left one of the most exciting and glamorous retail rides any woman could ask for and stepped off the VS corporate jet for a new life as a highly-paid consultant, blogger and now jewelry and gift artisan with GlamTribale. Having to fend for myself, my integrity was intact with women.

Remembering WW2, London Refuses To Be Bombshelled

As a blogger, I have always been true to the same convictions that prompted me to leave the Victoria’s Secret organization. VS gets the praise they deserve from me but criticism when the world’s largest lingerie brand is out of step with women’s self-interests and psychological wellbeing.

When VS fashion show consultant Sophia Neophitous famously snubbed Kate Upton in the New York Times, she received as much criticism as I could muster. It’s bad enough dealing with religion’s constant guilt-heaping on women. We don’t need it from Victoria’s Secret and definitely not from Sophia Neophitous who famously referred to Kate Upton as looking like a ‘footballers wife’ (as are Gisele Bundchen and Victoria Beckham for heaven’s sake!!!).

Note that Kate Upton is laughing all the way to the bank and rocketed onto Forbes top model list in terms of her income.

'Angels' By Russell James Is 304 Pages Of Nude Artistry & Sensuality

Erin Heatherton in ‘Angels’ by Russell James

I’ve appreciated the sensual photography of Victoria’s Secret photographer Russell James for years and am so delighted that the man artist who truly understands female sensuality is launching a 304 page book — his fifth — of black and white nude photographs. What a perfect gift for the holidays, one that women will surely appreciate as much as men.

The stunning art book captures runway veterans such as  Gisele Bündchen, fresh faces like Kendall Jenner, as well as Rihanna, and Victoria’s Secret stars including Alessandra Ambrosio, Doutzen Kroes, Karlie Closs, Candice Swanepoel, Behati Prinsloo, Lily Aldridge, Adriana Lima —all of them posing nude.

I hope people see images that are sensual, empowering to women and that show my love for light, shape and form.

“The photographs are very honest and they show women in their best light. They aren’t vulgar, they are sexy but sensual, and that is what I love,” said longtime Victoria’s Secret model Karolina Kurkova at the September 11 launch party at Russell’s good friend Donna Karan’s Stephen Weiss gallery . “People like to work with him because he makes them feel comfortable and he’s artistic. It is timeless, and something you’d like framed in your house.”

Behati Prinsloo for ‘Angels’ by Russell JamesSpeaking about ‘Angels’, James said: “My previous 4 books have been subject focused and this book is entirely focused on ’the nude’. I was incredibly humbled and excited when the people I asked agreed, as it indicated a level of trust that I greatly value. I took it to mean that the woman in the book felt the shots were something that other woman might admire, and that is my goal always.”

Doutzen Kroes in ‘Angels’ by Russell JamesModel Lily Aldridge, who was photographed with fellow Angel Candice Swanepoel, spoke fondly about the experience shooting with James. “It was amazing. I shoot with him so often for Victoria’s Secret that he is like a family member to me. I love him and trust him fully,” said Aldridge in a black Donna Karan gown at Thhursday’s launch party. “Shooting something like this felt very comfortable and easy. We had fun with it because it wasn’t for something specific—it was just a fun shoot to do. I didn’t even think it was going to be a book, but it naturally just became one.”

Victoria's Secret: How DARE You Use Kate Upton's Old Photo On A New Catalogue?

Women Are Frankly Flawed, Victoria’s Secret, Get Used To It

My dear Victoria’s Secret friends. What in the world is up with you guys this week? It’s bad enough that you launched a new bra called ‘Flawless’, as if we ladies need to be reminded yet one more time of just how much we need fixing. Our brains are already saturated with inferiority complexes as we pick up yet another cue that our natural beauty just isn’t good enough.

Hopefully your former super Angel Gisele can set you straight on why ‘Flawless’ isn’t a good name for a bra these days. Take a good read of yesterday’s post Gisele Bundche & Johan Lindeberg Say Basta To ‘Flawless’.

We LIKE our imperfections and unique features. They are part of our IDENTITY. We don’t need the biggest lingerie brand in the world — one that consumed 10 years of my life in a great career ride —  telling us that we need to assess our flaws every time we look in the mirror.

Some of us are blondes and some brunettes. Some of us have round faces and others high foreheads with chiseled features. A few of us are 5’10” but most 5’4”. Some of us care about others and have good hearts with regard to how we treat people. Others do not.

Using Kate Upton Is A Mortal Sin After You Publicly Humiliated Her

Frankly, I can forgive you for ‘Flawless’ and continue to hold you in some regard. But you have committed a MORTAL SIN putting Kate Upton’s 2011 image on the back of a new Victoria’s Secret catalogue.

What in the world were you thinking, Victoria’s Secret Catalog??????????????? I thought your previous treatment of Kate Upton was a new low. In your crass tearing up of a woman’s reputation — which you did very publicly with your Victoria’s Secret stylist representativeve Sophia Neophitou saying that Victoria’s Secret would never use Kate Upton, because she is “like a Page 3 girl” — I thought you hit a new low in how you relate to women.

Neophitou said that Upton is “like a footballer’s wife with the too-blond hair and that kind of face that anyone with enough money can go out and buy.”

Today, because Kate Upton is a great success in spite of Sophia Neophitou’s obnoxious, petty, demeaning comments about her, you decide to capitalize on Kate’s acceptance by Carine Roitfeld, Anna Wintour, Steven Meisel, and countless other top people in fashion. This is a totally disgusting turn of events, Victoria’s Secret.

Kate Upton @ Muse Magazine, Says Gisele Is Footballer's Wife

Note | Nudity The high resolution images haven’t yet been released from Kate Upton’s Muse Magazine shoot with Sebastian Faena. The minis are available for viewing. It seems that Kate may just have that horrible Victoria’s Secret fashion show stylist Sophia Neophitou eating crow before she’s finished. Kate may be a model commoner — as Neophitou calls her — but she and Faena make sweet music with Kate channeling Marilyn Monroe for Muse Magazine.

Kate is darn quick-witted, throwing her own volley over the net against Neophitou. Despite Upton having appeared in print ads for Victoria’s Secret, Neophitou described the 5-foot-10 beauty as “like a Page 3 girl,” a reference to the British newspaper The Sun. “She’s like a footballer’s wife, with the too-blond hair and that kind of face that anyone with enough money can go out and buy.”

Upton responded: “Gisele’s a football player’s wife. Gisele’s in that category so I’m good.”

Given that Gisele is the highest-paid model in the world, making far more money than her husband, Kate rocks it with that true statement about her looking like a footballer’s wife. And just what IS wrong with Gisele? Just how did Sophia Neophitou become a spokesperson for Victoria’s Secret? I thought that was Monica Mitro’s or Ed Razek’s job.

There is so much interest in my own article about Kate Upton, perhaps because her body is one to be celebrated — as is her look.

Reflecting personally, let me share with readers that my 2Ps in a Pod column with a Catholic monk is now over. The skin care ads are down.

Why, you ask? Because a few self-appointed, very uppity people with mouths like Neophitou think that I’m a Page 3 girl, too. Too-blond hair and a slut-girl face. Decadent, disgustingly sensual — as Rick Santorum would say as he now turns to condemn sensuality, too — and a danger to humankind.

Blonds like Upton and me have no moral fiber, given our embrace of Smart Sensuality identities.

VS Stylist Says Kate Upton Is Too Fat; Anja Rubik Is Perfect?

Kate Upton with her proud parents at the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition partyWhen my friend Jennifer Lewis posted on my FB page that there was a dustup over Kate Upton representing a move from Sports Illustrated to use curvier models, I brushed off the comment, beliving that SI is a guy’s magazine and it generally prefers curvier models.

Kate snapped by Sports Illustrated Assistant Editor MJ Day in Las Vegas. We featured Kate Upton’s 2011 Victoria’s Secret catalogue photos and noted that she wasn’t in the 2011 fashion show. So what?

Even I gulped when I saw the phone pics of some of Kate’s publicity stunts. With the social conservatives out in full force these days, VS must be extra careful of their affiliations. Pics like Kate’s left may go down with drunken guys at Hooters or even Yale, but they don’t get her credibility with organizations like Victoria’s Secret.

Nevertheless, Kate Upton has done a great job of building her career — and let’s not forget her credentials as an excellent, award-winning equestrian. Kate’s an all-American girl. Just like rebuilding General Motors, such a woman might become popular again. Don’t count her out

As a former VS executive and Fashion Director, I’m pretty calm about the Sports Illustrated Swimwear issue. It drives good traffic and readers stick around our websites, converting to committed direct supporters. I learned long ago that our women readers love the same images as guys do — and we try to filter out the ones they wouldn’t.

You’re Kidding Me | Kate Upton Is Fat?

Bottom line, I’ve been on cruise control over the Kate Upton images until learning that the fashion industry is all holier-than-thou about Kate Upton being fat. OK, could somebody get me about four Advil. Yes, writes The Gloss, ‘Kate Upton Gets Hated On For Being Awesome’ and also Stop Calling Kate Upton Fat (It Makes You Sound Stupid).

Reading along, I’ve changed my mind. Forget the Advil. Please bring me a Bombay Sapphire martini straight up. I don’t believe this crap. The Gloss does not exaggerate.

We could leave it there had Sophia Neophitou, who just signed on as a key person in choosing models and themes for the Victoria’s Secret fashion shows, now absolutely brutalized Kate Upton in the public press this week. The stylist is also the founder of 10 Magazine and a major contributor to fashion’s obsession with size 0 models.

After her comments to the New York Times Style section this week about Kate Upton, Columbus Victoria’s Secret executives must be choking.

We would never use Ms. Upton for a Victoria’s Secret show,” Ms. Neophitou said by telephone last week from London. And, while Ms. Upton has, in fact, modeled on occasion for the company’s catalog, her look, said Ms. Neophitou, is “too obvious” to be featured in what has become the most widely viewed runway show in the world.

“She’s like a Page 3 girl,” Ms. Neophitou said, referring to the scantily clad voluptuous women featured in The Sun, a London tabloid. “She’s like a footballer’s wife, with the too-blond hair and that kind of face that anyone with enough money can go out and buy.”

Simply stated, I am speechless.
