'Angels' By Russell James Is 304 Pages Of Nude Artistry & Sensuality

Erin Heatherton in ‘Angels’ by Russell James

I’ve appreciated the sensual photography of Victoria’s Secret photographer Russell James for years and am so delighted that the man artist who truly understands female sensuality is launching a 304 page book — his fifth — of black and white nude photographs. What a perfect gift for the holidays, one that women will surely appreciate as much as men.

The stunning art book captures runway veterans such as  Gisele Bündchen, fresh faces like Kendall Jenner, as well as Rihanna, and Victoria’s Secret stars including Alessandra Ambrosio, Doutzen Kroes, Karlie Closs, Candice Swanepoel, Behati Prinsloo, Lily Aldridge, Adriana Lima —all of them posing nude.

I hope people see images that are sensual, empowering to women and that show my love for light, shape and form.

“The photographs are very honest and they show women in their best light. They aren’t vulgar, they are sexy but sensual, and that is what I love,” said longtime Victoria’s Secret model Karolina Kurkova at the September 11 launch party at Russell’s good friend Donna Karan’s Stephen Weiss gallery . “People like to work with him because he makes them feel comfortable and he’s artistic. It is timeless, and something you’d like framed in your house.”

Behati Prinsloo for ‘Angels’ by Russell JamesSpeaking about ‘Angels’, James said: “My previous 4 books have been subject focused and this book is entirely focused on ’the nude’. I was incredibly humbled and excited when the people I asked agreed, as it indicated a level of trust that I greatly value. I took it to mean that the woman in the book felt the shots were something that other woman might admire, and that is my goal always.”

Doutzen Kroes in ‘Angels’ by Russell JamesModel Lily Aldridge, who was photographed with fellow Angel Candice Swanepoel, spoke fondly about the experience shooting with James. “It was amazing. I shoot with him so often for Victoria’s Secret that he is like a family member to me. I love him and trust him fully,” said Aldridge in a black Donna Karan gown at Thhursday’s launch party. “Shooting something like this felt very comfortable and easy. We had fun with it because it wasn’t for something specific—it was just a fun shoot to do. I didn’t even think it was going to be a book, but it naturally just became one.”

Luma Grothe By Ellen von Unwerth Celebrates A Sensual Body For Vogue Brazil September 2014

Ellen von Unwerth contributes another body-loving editorial to Vogue Brazil’s September 2014. (See Alessandro Ambrosio in ‘Mais Amor, Por Fabor’).  Model Luma Grothe is styled by Pedro Sales, with beauty by Silvio Giorgio.

I marvel at the sensual openness of Brazilian society, with an embrace of nudity that would never happen in America. Turning to the book ‘Brazil: The Once and Future Country’, author Marshall C. Eakin observes:

As a rule, Brazilians are simply less inhibited and uptight about the human body and physical contact than peoples of the developed world. The string bikinis (tanga), for example, for which Brazil is famous, are worn by women of all shapes and sizes. The willingness to expose flesh, whether one’s physique be fit and trim or fat and flabby, reflects a people much more comfortable with the human body. This “laid back” attitude, however, does not stop the wealthy from resorting to cosmetic surgery. Rio de Janeiro has become the world capital for plastic surgery, and Ivo Pitanguy is its best-known plastic surgeon. The affluent are obviously not completely comfortable with physical imperfections.

Brazilians are also a much more expressive and physical people than North Americans and Northern Europeans. When friends meet, they invariably greet with physical contact. Men shake hands and embrace… Like so many Latin peoples, Brazilians also have a sense of personal space that often seems non existent to North Americans. Many times I have seen a Brazilian (literally) back a North American around a room as the latter tries to move away from the former. Brazilians want to be close and touching. North Americans want to keep more distance.

Les Merveilleuses De Ladurée Adds Sensual Blush To Paris Landscape

In my 10-year run at Victoria’s Secret, we had few rituals. In my case, as fashion director and head of product development, I was always supposed to be thinking outside the box. In Paris with my colleagues, I learned to think inside the box — inside a box of Ladurée macorons, chosen for their sublime color and mouth-watering tastes of every ice cream flavor imaginable.

Laduree is one company I always celebrate as a truly sensual brand and example of the relationship the French have with guilty pleasures. Unlike Americans, the French are perfectly at peace with sinning on occasion. After all, this is the country that installed Adam’s first wife Lilith right there with Eve atop the Cathedral of Notre Dame.

Les Merveilleuses de Laduree was inspired by the Merveilleuses of 18th Century France, who were known for their extravagant, decadent behavior and fashion styles inspired by the ancient Greek and Romans. Laduree developed a makeup line that places a great emphasis on blushes with three different formulas, as during the age of the Merveilleuses. Blushing the cheeks was the main means of playing up one’s feminine allure back in the day, prompting me to ask if western women blush ever these days.

The French understand that eating an occasional macaron does not make a woman fat. And thinking about food doesn’t cause us to eat more of it. In fact, scientific research indicates that Imagining Food Pleasures Decreases Actual Consumption.

I’ve long believed that America’s obsession with sin, sex and guilt is a major factor in our obesity epidemic. Granted, the French are more vigilante in monitoring food consumption than Americans. But they also enjoy pleasure and their bodies, too. Food is not a substitute for the denial of life’s other pleasures.

Within this mindset, blushing and bathing with Les Merveilleuses De Ladurée products makes perfect sense and a divine personal treat, like wearing that splendid French lingerie that only its owner may see. Facing herself in the mirror, she sees a real treat, a feast better than food — a woman at peace with herself. ~ Anne

Woman | Lyndsey Scott | Ben Hassett | W Mag Sept 2010 | 'Double Vision' NSFW

Note | Nudity We just bumped into this Sept 2010 W Magazine accessories editorial featuring Lyndsey Scott, lensed by Ben Hassett. It’s conceptually magnificent, even though it got little circulation among bloggers.

The comments around Lyndsey Scott at TFS were very strong — some of the best I’ve read talking about a model’s physicality. We’ll be checking up on Lyndsey Scott almost a year later. Meanwhile, we must share this stunning sensual photography. /Carolyn Tate Angel styling; Peter Gray hair, Francelle Daly, makeup
