Luma Grothe By Ellen von Unwerth Celebrates A Sensual Body For Vogue Brazil September 2014

Ellen von Unwerth contributes another body-loving editorial to Vogue Brazil’s September 2014. (See Alessandro Ambrosio in ‘Mais Amor, Por Fabor’).  Model Luma Grothe is styled by Pedro Sales, with beauty by Silvio Giorgio.

I marvel at the sensual openness of Brazilian society, with an embrace of nudity that would never happen in America. Turning to the book ‘Brazil: The Once and Future Country’, author Marshall C. Eakin observes:

As a rule, Brazilians are simply less inhibited and uptight about the human body and physical contact than peoples of the developed world. The string bikinis (tanga), for example, for which Brazil is famous, are worn by women of all shapes and sizes. The willingness to expose flesh, whether one’s physique be fit and trim or fat and flabby, reflects a people much more comfortable with the human body. This “laid back” attitude, however, does not stop the wealthy from resorting to cosmetic surgery. Rio de Janeiro has become the world capital for plastic surgery, and Ivo Pitanguy is its best-known plastic surgeon. The affluent are obviously not completely comfortable with physical imperfections.

Brazilians are also a much more expressive and physical people than North Americans and Northern Europeans. When friends meet, they invariably greet with physical contact. Men shake hands and embrace… Like so many Latin peoples, Brazilians also have a sense of personal space that often seems non existent to North Americans. Many times I have seen a Brazilian (literally) back a North American around a room as the latter tries to move away from the former. Brazilians want to be close and touching. North Americans want to keep more distance.

Woman | Lyndsey Scott | Ben Hassett | W Mag Sept 2010 | 'Double Vision' NSFW

Note | Nudity We just bumped into this Sept 2010 W Magazine accessories editorial featuring Lyndsey Scott, lensed by Ben Hassett. It’s conceptually magnificent, even though it got little circulation among bloggers.

The comments around Lyndsey Scott at TFS were very strong — some of the best I’ve read talking about a model’s physicality. We’ll be checking up on Lyndsey Scott almost a year later. Meanwhile, we must share this stunning sensual photography. /Carolyn Tate Angel styling; Peter Gray hair, Francelle Daly, makeup

If We Imagine Breakfast This Beautiful, Will We Eat Less?

BSS | Breakfast Interrupted from Bruton Stroube Studios on Vimeo.

If one imagines breakfast being this beautiful, nourishing our senses with this much gorgeous stimulation, will we eat less? Is this visual gorgeosity and appreciation of food well prepared and served with beautiful style a key to eating less?

Having roamed the streets of Paris for years, I think the answer is ‘yes’.

Watching this video yesterday, it was impossible not to recall the Carnegie Mellon research suggesting that allowing ourselves to think about food pleasures doesn’t automatically trigger our impulses to eat more.

In fact the opposite occurs, through a process called habituation.

Coincidentally, NYTimes writer Henry Alford takes up the same research topic, applying it to his own desire to lose a few pounds.

Pirelli Defines Sensuality & Fashion Bodies | Arthur Elgort | Karl Lagerfeld

I was surprised just now, seeing these images of women from the 1990 Pirelli Calendar, lensed by American photographer Arthur Elgort. Reading about Arthur Elgort, the image maker attributes much of his ‘snapshot’ style to a love of music and dance, especially jazz and ballet.

These Arthur Elgort images celebrate a Smart Sensuality woman who is fit and active, a woman who celebrates her body in a way that is integrated with her sexuality and is part of her identity.

Writing often about the growth of a ‘monastic, sexless’ style in fashion and popular culture, I can’t help but contrast these Arthur Elgort images of women in action, created for the 1990 Pirelli Calendar, with Karl Lagerfeld’s photos from this year’s calendar.

Karl Lagerfeld’s 2011 Pirelli Calendar

Karl Lagerfeld | Pirelli Calendar 2011 | The Female Divinities & Muses Are Feminists AOC Sensually Yours

Lagerfeld’s images are cooly intellectual and monastic — which is his philosophy when the topic is sensuality. Elgort’s images celebrate women in motion, active warrior goddesses, athletes. And while both men love ballet, I speculate that Elgort adores Alvin Ailey as much as George Ballanchine.

Padma Lakshmi | 'Mother Superior' | Vogue India January 2011

Can Padma Lakshmi and India’s relationship with sensuality impact global fashion?

We noted the comments in forums about Padma Lakshmi’s Vogue India January 2011 photo shoot by Prabuddha Dasgupta. Styled by Anaita Shroff Adajania, the comments were “I don’t like Vogue India. It always looks like something GQ would do.”

Another key piece of New Eroticism thinking involves the rise of Brazil and India as two BRIC countries.

In our connected world where America’s lack of sensuality values will no longer drive a global agenda 20 years from now, and the Europeans are comparatively liberated sensually, Brazil and India seem to be the wild cards in how female sensuality is presented.

We expect China to remain restrained, relying on lots of glamour and baubles to drive the luxury message.

In Brazil and India, natural beauty is revered and a more organic, holistic approach to style should influence the global marketplace. Take a look at Vogue Padma Lakshmi photographer Prabuddha Dasgupta’s website for words and images of women in India.

Indian women as subjects of photographic representation have never been seen as anything other than exotic models of attractiveness… its current avatar being the one dimensional Bollywood stereotype. And that, ironically in an age where women’s accomplishments in practically every arena have far surpassed their male counterparts.

These are portraits of urban Indian women, selected for their interestingness rather than their physical charms, drawn from a variety of disciplines, sometimes confirming to gender stereotypes and sometimes defying them.
