Revisiting Filippa Hamilton & Life After Ralph Lauren with Joachim Muller Ruchholtz for Amica January 2013

Filippa Hamilton comes out fighting in Joachim Muller Ruchholtz’s editorial ‘W La Giacca’, styled by Giulia Bassi for Amica’s January issue. We share a second set of images from the same issue that are part of an interview with the model who was famously fired from Ralph Lauren in 2009 for being too fat.

The Swedish-French Hamilton didn’t go running to Twitter and broadcast her woes far and wide throughout the fashion industry. But when her story finally came to light after Ralph Lauren released extraordinaryly twisted Photoshopped images of the model in its Japan ads, that Filippa Hamilton stepped up to the plate and led an international conversation about being the fat girl size 4 in a size 0 fashion world.

We can’t say that Filippa Hamilton’s career rebounded after the Ralph Lauren debacle. But her ‘fierceness’ resulting —  not from an extraordinary ability to scowl —  but her composed, articulate response to being the subject of intense controversy brought her the respect of many people including myself.

In the always agitated discussion of body image and unusually low BMI models, Filippa Hamilton’s voice was steady in a fashion similar to Crystal Renn’s. Any time we see Filippa in print, we say bravo! Her body led many of us to take a firm stance on the patriarchal nature of the fashion industry as it expresses itself in today’s preference for boy bodies and desexualized women. Unfortunately, Filippa Hamilton was sexy with curves.

At the end of this editorial sequence is Filippa’s 2009 story and the major essays from me that she inspired. ~ Anne

'Just Being A Woman' | Isabelle Caro Sought Control of Her Body

Isabelle Caro’s death will inspire a lot of talk about anorexia and body image. Most people will blame the fashion industry, when the discussion just isn’t that simple. (Read my Isabelle Caro Dies, Reviving Size 0 Fashion Model Debate).

Have you noticed that it’s little men and really thin women who have a problem with even size 8 women? Think about that fact. Do small people gang up on normal body size folks in fashion land?

Talented short men can be tyrants. Consider Napoleon at about 5’6” and Hitler at 5’9”. The typical argument is that short men have ego problems, but many short men have ruled the world.

If they have insecurities, short men are good at working them out, often devising life strategies that more than overcome cultural preferences for tall males.

This topic of fashion and size 0 models first blew up in the Filippa Hamilton 2009 Photoshop debate. As the facts unfolded, we learned that Hamilton was too fat as a tall size 4 to model for Ralph.

To be fair, Ralph Lauren isn’t quoted as actually saying anything negative about larger women — just that Filippa Hamilton was no longer suitable as his muse. Karl Lagerfeld pulled no punches on the subject of larger women either, calling out the “fat mummies” who eat too many potato chips.

Filippa Hamilton Reveals: Ralph Lauren Fired Her in April 2009

Updated on Fri, October 16, 2009 by Registered CommenterAnne

Updated on Sat, October 17, 2009 by Registered CommenterAnne

Correction: Report from yesterday, with correct spelling of Filippa’s name.

In the ongoing sage of last week’s Photoshopped Filippa Hamilton photos, the Ralph Lauren apology neglected to mention one fact. Ralph Lauren fired Hamilton last April, for “not living up to her contract”. Simply stated, even though she hadn’t gained a pound, according to Fillipa, she no longer fit in the clothes.

At 5’10’ and 120 pounds, the size 4 Filippa Hamilton has a BMI of 17.2, technically anorexic. Had she lost 10 pounds, at 110 her BMI would be a life-threatening 15.8.

Fillipa Hamilton was too fat, in the male-driven march to reduce women to nothingness. Read last week’s: Ralph Lauren Celebrates the End of American Women’s Sexuality.

Hamilton appeared on the Today show. Here’s the video:

Ralph Lauren Dislikes Women With Sensual Curves & Breasts

http://bit.ly/29JhHa

This current Ralph Lauren ad required Filippa Hamilton to become a caricature of herself? This version of Filippa Hamilton presents a thin but more real-looking woman.

I would love to ask David Lauren, senior VP-advertising, marketing and corporate communications for Ralph Lauren and also son of chairman-CEO Ralph Lauren if his ahead-of-the pack commitment to the role of digital technology in branding and marketing, involves buying into our Real or Surreal trend.

Digital life gradually blurs all lines of demarcation between reality as we know it, and digital realities springing from the minds of the people who construct these new visions of people, things and experiences.

This is a powerful concept for any artist or graphic artist — creating women as he/she wishes them to be, and not as we are.

More often than not, these image creators are men. I study this trend moreso in pornography — where the woman becomes a vision of anything a man desires — but the logic applies here as well. more

Ralph Lauren Celebrates the End of American Women's Sexuality

This current Ralph Lauren ad required Filippa Hamilton to become a caricature of herself? This version of Filippa Hamilton presents a thin but more real-looking woman.

http://bit.ly/29JhHa

I would love to ask David Lauren, senior VP-advertising, marketing and corporate communications for Ralph Lauren and also son of chairman-CEO Ralph Lauren if his ahead-of-the pack commitment to the role of digital technology in branding and marketing, involves buying into our Real or Surreal trend.

Making Real Surreal

Digital life gradually blurs all lines of demarcation between reality as we know it, and digital realities springing from the minds of the people who construct these new visions of people, things and experiences.

This is a powerful concept for any artist or graphic artist — creating women as he/she wishes them to be, and not as we are.

More often than not, these image creators are men. I study this trend often in pornography — where the woman becomes a vision of anything a man desires — but the logic applies here as well.

You can laugh at me, but the people behind this new, left-side Ralph Lauren ad seem to render Filippa Hamilton powerless. Not only are women this thin typically ill and even dying, they are effectively neutered of sexual desire.

Anorexia Is Not Sexy

Frequently, a woman stops menstruating and also loses her libido, when she looks like the woman on the left. Perhaps the Ralph Lauren folks are flirting with ‘le petit mort’ and not just in the orgasm department. I understand this image was released in Japan where women are smaller-boned and have much smaller bodies than American women. But anorexia is also on the rise in Japan, a country with unusually strong patriarchal convictions about the role of women in society.

A Smart Sensuality woman has muscles and is strong. This does not mean that she is overweight.

Just yesterday I saw a young woman at my gym who was tall and slender but she lifted an enormous amount of weight. And she had muscles, although they were long and lean. I got off one of the leg press machines, with the weight set at 180 and she flipped it to 230 pounds.

Contrasting these two Ralph Lauren ad photos, I see a desire to render women powerless (on the new left-hand ad) and without sexuality, as Filippa Hamilton appears on the right, in an older ad.

Because I am devoted to our wrestling with complicated topics around female sexuality, I don’t want to let this Ralph Lauren controversy sit only in a pot of bubbling discussion around body image and weight.

Size 0 Is An American/European Burqa

I firmly believe that subconsciously many men, including men designers, wish to eliminate the fecundity of female sexuality — Jung’s great-mother archetype. Male ambivalence around female principles is understandable and deeply rooted in history and civilization.
