Republicans Cut ‘Forcible Rape’ Only Stipulation from Antiabortion-Funding Bill Feb. 4, 2011
WaPo reports that Republican lawmakers have removed the term “forcible rape” from an antiabortion bill in Congress.
Called No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, the bill seeks to permanently bar federal funds from being used to subsidize abortions. It allows exceptions in cases where pregnancy as resulted from incest or when the life of the mother is threatened without an abortion.
The modified term will now allow exceptions in all cases of rape.
A spokesman for Rep. Christopher H. Smith (R-N.J.), a chief sponsor of the bill, said women’s groups had “misconstrued” the intention of the rape clause.
Jezebel’s The Girl’s Guide to Having an Abortion
We support Jezebel in publishing The Girl’s Guide to Having an Abortion. Written by a Jezebel commentator, the post is factual and explains procedures to women that are available in America, where abortion is legal and granted by the Supreme Court.
It’s worth nothing that with all the Tea Party talk about returning to the founding fathers vision of the Constitution, abortion was legal and widely practiced at the founding of America.
