Benjamin Kanarek | Luana Tiefke | Symphony on Ice | Vogue Brazil Sept 2010

There’s a reason why Toronto-native, Parisian-based photographer Benjamin Kanarek and I get along. In our digital-technology world of bullet-point, pulsating micro-moments, Benjamin Kanarek rows his production boat in the manner of a Manet painting.

His video of making “Symphony on Ice”, featuring model Luana Tiefke wearing Chanel in the September 2010 issue of Vogue Brazil, is a great example of Benjamin Kanarek in action. See Benjamin’s blog.

Don’t misunderstand me. It would be my kiss of fashion death to him, to describe Kanarek as refreshingly calming, superbly creative, artistically competent and — god forbid — having an accesible personality, in the frenetic world of fashion photography.

I’m sure Benjamin kicks serious butt as needed, but he’s just so not a diva, so not-self-absorbed, and so not full of himself, in spite of his considerable talent.

Fashion Shoot 101

You know the fashion video drill. Hair flying, music pulsating, everyone is beautiful and talented beyond belief. This business is not for mere mortals, but for God’s chosen people.

And excuse me, can you please get the whole video scene down to 90 seconds, because Internet viewers have no interest in understanding the genuine substance of working on a fashion shoot. Just give them the glossies, damn it. Readers don’t care about process; Powerpoint it.

Au contraire.

Richard Avedon | Nadja Auermann | 'In Memory of the Late Mr. and Mrs. Comfort'

Richard Avedon’s Divine Fashion Decadence

These spectacularly decadent photos of a fable photographed and created for The New Yorker by famed photographer Richard Avedon, in collaboration with Doon Arbus and featuring model Nadja Auermann, were featured in the Nov 6, 1995 issue.

We can read many meanings into these brilliant images, but more than anything they represent a farewell of sorts between Avedon and the fashion journalism that made him a top-tier celebrity. The series of 27 pages of designer-clothes photos are shocking and disruptive visually, existing as an undeniable social commentary on the world of couture and luxury living, Bonfire of the Vanities-style.

The Richard Avedon Mr. and Mrs. Comfort photos for The New Yorker represent a revulsion against the very high society world that embraced him. They are a violent cariacature of a world of thin women and rich men who are — at the end of the day — dust like the rest of us mortals.

Warren Buffett and Bill Gates understand this reality of life. Fashionistas, especially those married to rich financiers, often fancy themselves as cut from a different cloth.

A sensuality-drenched the skelton of Mr Comfort appears thwarted by Mrs Comfort, who has abandoned sex for stilletos, even if red is a primary color in the fashion selections.  The many sexual references and poses to the Garden of Eden are physically marked ‘Stricly No Entry’.

Unable to enjoy pleasures of the senses, Mr and Mrs Comfort resort to the pleasure of materialism, as a substitute for carnality and intimacy. The splendor of their surroundings is reminiscent of the splendor of Rome and the Vatican, where excess is defined only as it relates to flesh but not pomp and circumstance.

Global Fashion Patriarchy

It’s almost a year now since the infamous Ralph Lauren photoshop debacle on Filippa Hamilton’s body caused us to consider the still prevalent relationship between fashion, body image and physicality. Grappling with the reality of women’s sexual oppression worldwide and the patriarchy’s need to control female sexuality, we are convinced after deep soulsearching, that fashion is a willing collaborator in the process of thwarting female sensual desire.

Halle Berry | Mario Testino | Vogue Sept 2010 | Ravishing Orchid in the Prime of Life

Photographed by Mario Testino, Halle Berry gives her first interview in three years to Vogue’s Jonathan Van Meter for the September 2010 issue. Halle Berry is the first woman of color to front cover US Vogue in September, considered the biggest issue of the year.

Speaking candidly, Halle Berry says she’s tired of media misperceptions of her.

“That I am this brooding, twisted, lovesick person who just can’t get it right in life. Every story about me is so heavy and dramatic. That’s not how I do life. But that’s the impression people have, and that’s what keeps getting reiterated. As if I’m still stuck in all the muck of the past. And I am so not.”

Admitting that she has discussed her trials and tribulations publicly, Halle Berry is annoyed that the public doesn’t want to believe that she has evolved as a woman, grown as a human being.

At age 44, Halle Berry maintains a grueling five-day a week exercise routine with Gunnar Peterson.

New York's Standard Hotel Delivers Dante's View of Civilization

Marco Brambilla’s video mural “Civilization” at New York’s Standard HotelNew York’s Standard Hotel is back in the news, with Target’s voyeuristic Fall 2010 light show, scheduled for Aug. 18, 9pm EST at the Standard. Noting that Marco Brambilla’s ‘Civilization’ is called on S Magazine blog, we’ve moved our video up front in Les Artistes.

Last year’s Sensuality News (very sexy, soft x-rated) article on New York’s Standard Hotel, located in the newly-renovated High Line Park, broke all records for a single article on any of our websites. In the past two weeks, Givenchy transgender model Lea T arrived, left the Standard Hotel in the dust.

These trends confirm much about the identity of Anne of Carversville and Sensuality News. We exist to help readers taste the forbidden fruit in a respectable, tasteful, informative, cohesive point of view atmosphere. We address the challenges of morality and civilization headon.

Benjamin Kanarek | "Fly Me to the Moon" | Bloggers & Artistic Freedom

Admittedly the sounds of  “Also Sprach Zarathustra” and Stanley Kubrick’s movie “2001 Space Odyssey” are favorite artistic inspirations of mine.  We adore this Harper’s Bazaar China Aug. 2010 fashion editorial “Fly Me to the Moon” and video that tap into the futuristic zeitgeist and also a vision of new Asian beauty, one that challenges Western standards. See original photos here on Benjamin Kanarek Blog.

There is a minor fashion industry, blogger brouhaha brewing around Benjamin Kanarek’s “Fly Me to the Moon” video and editorial, which was not chosen for exposure by one of the leading fashion scan blogs. Editorial decisions always belong with the website owner, and we can’t begin to cover all the materials we would love to write about here at Anne of Carversville and Sensuality News.

Benjamin Kanarek’s Making of “Fly Me to the Moon”

In the case of photographer Benjamin Kanarek’s “Fly me to the Moon” editorial for Harper’s Bazaar China Aug 2010, it seems that a mistake has been made.

Both the image editorial and accompanying video are an artistic revelation, and we want to offer our unwavering support of this premium-quality creativity in fashion imagery and messages.

Evidence of an editorial shakeout in fashion blogging is emerging, and we’re seeing a fault line developing between creatives who have something to say, and those who don’t. The standard scan fare will soon be separated from the gourmet offering of photos with thoughtful commentary or comment dialogue.
